Healthy, Handsome Skin Needs a Shaving Balm

August 28th, 2014 admin

After taking so much care on the calibre of your shave, a good quality aftershave balm will help perfect the end result.

Shaving on a daily basis destroys your skin’s hydrolipidic film, which is an emulsion of water/moisture and sebaceous oils, among other things. This layer helps to protect facial skin especially, which is usually always at the mercy of the elements, bacteria and fungi. So it makes complete sense to use a product that in some way emulates this natural protection.

Your dad may have used a stinging cologne to close his pores and make him smell nice, but contemporary research and practice means more men are choosing products that are kinder to skin and more in sympathy with it.

Shaving balms include a wide range of ingredients which have been tried and tested, which are low on chemical substances and high on natural contents, including essential oils, vitamins and herbal extracts.

These men’s balms include the likes of sweetbriar/ rosehip, green tea, bergamot, lemon and lime, lavender, grape, tree moss, geranium, patchouli, aloe vera and tea tree, as well as vitamins A, C and E and olive oil. Unlike a few years ago, it is now possible to find balms with entirely natural ingredients and even vegetarian and vegan men’s shaving balms.

Do not under estimate the power of these substances: many are naturally antiseptic, soothing, moisturising and non-allergenic. Those shaving balms which use essential oils have the benefit of having a long lasting perfume, too, and there are also balms which have no scent at all for those who prefer that of their favourite body spray or deodorant.

Lastly, remember that if your skin does get very dry that you should use an appropriate moisturiser for your skin type between shaves to keep it supple and healthy.
